Zoning Administrator

The Administrative Officer, commonly referred to as the Zoning Administrator, is nominated by the Planning Commission and appointed by the Selectboard to administer Burke’s Zoning Bylaw, as provided for in 24 V.S.A. §4448. The Administrative Officer literally administers and strictly enforces the provisions of the bylaw, and in doing so inspects development projects, maintains records, and performs other related tasks as necessary and appropriate. All development review is initiated with the Administrative Officer.

The Administrative Officer is responsible for posting, on an applicant’s property, within view of the public right-of-way, any permit issued by the Administrative Officer or any development application awaiting a hearing by the Development Review Board. Such posting shall occur within 24 hours of any permit issued by the Administrative Officer; or in the case of any scheduled hearing of the Development Review Board, posting shall adhere to the time-frames specified within Burke’s bylaw with subsequent information on approval or denial added within 24 hours of the Board’s decision.

The administrative officer is typically one of the very first public officials contacted when property development is proposed or someone has a complaint. Although legally the administrative officer has no discretion in interpreting and applying Burke’s bylaws, he or she is in an ideal position to educate the general public about Burke’s zoning regulations and to assist applicants through the sometimes confusing review process.

Burke’s Administrative Officer  (Zoning Administrator) is Mike Harris and he can be contacted by phone at (802) 376-3706 or (802) 467-3717. He can be reached by email at harris37@yahoo.com or burke@burkevermont.org.
